It was only until the intervention of the current purple dragon Spyro did the war finally turn the tide and the forces of darkness were driven back. For many years, the Dragons fought for the realms against Malefor's army of Apes, until the Dragon race lost the war, resulting in their numbers dwindling and the lands becoming overtaken by the Dark Armies. His influence shrouded the world in darkness as his armies threatened the land in his attempts to rule it. When the first purple dragon Malefor turned to evil, the world spiraled into chaos. A dam near the exit to the city controls the ocean water that flows into the valley. This continent was originally a wide forest area that surrounded The Catacombs, Twilight Falls, the Valley of Avalar and the Dragon City. In The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, the focus is set on another region of the realms. In a map illustrated early in A New Beginning, there are other continents around the one that holds the Dragon Temple and the Swamp. There is also mention of a mainland in The Eternal Night. The temple itself overlooks several islands in the distant ocean that includes Dante's Freezer, Tall Plains, Munitions Forge and Concurrent Skies. In The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning and its sequel, the story's setting starts within a swamp that surrounds the Dragon Temple.
